At PAWS we're fighting every day to end pet homelessness and to save the unique cases who would otherwise not have a chance. We need a veterinarian who's ready to put on a cape and be part of a historic change in Philadelphia, is that you?

As the city’s largest rescue partner, our goal is a no-kill Philadelphia where every savable pet has a home. We’ve always known that we can’t simply adopt our way out of the problem, which is where our two high volume, high quality, spay/neuter, and wellness clinics and you come in! PAWS is seeking a full-time veterinarian that is able to work at both of our clinics. The schedule will likely be Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday 9-5. We are willing to split the full-time position into two part-time positions if desired.

The ideal candidate would be able to split their time between surgery and clinic.

Spay neuter requirements

• Ability to spay and neuter a minimum of 15 animals a day, an equal split of cats and dogs while working up to our normal caseload. Training will be provided to a candidate who shows promising surgical skills.
• Ideal candidates will be able to perform 25-35 surgeries per day.
• Shelter animals get worked into the day as time permits.
• In addition to spay/neuter for the public PAWS performs a variety of surgeries for our rescued animals. These include but are not limited to amputations, various soft tissue surgery, enucleations, eye lid repair, FHOs, hernia repairs, wound care, and basic dental services.
• Exam animals before surgery to asses their surgical readiness, for most patients this is the first time they’ve ever been to a vet.
• Oversee the two-three vet techs that are assigned to work with you in surgery.
• Provide oversight on logging anesthetic drugs used and maintaining controlled substance logs.
• Willingness to research and learn new procedures for shelter animals minimizing the number of animals we need to send to specialty facilities.
• Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and ability to manage the surgical flow and ensure safety.
• Experience with high volume spay/neuter is preferred but we will train the right candidate. 

Clinical and shelter requirements

The PAWS Wellness Clinic provides a means for low income families and animal rescue organizations in Philadelphia to access basic veterinary services for their dogs and cats while providing high quality care. The clinic is equipped with the medications and resources to handle routine outpatient cases including wellness exams, skin conditions, upper respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disease, non-emergent urinary tract conditions, minor soft-tissue injuries, and other preventative care. Laboratory services are provided at a reduced cost through Antech diagnostics. PAWS is also equipped with an ultrasound and will have an x-ray system within the next two months.

• Provide excellent customer service skills and education in a non-judgmental manner.
• Oversee patient flow to maximize time and ability to fit in shelter animal checks and foster parents with urgent issues in between appointments.
• Complete most appointments in the 20-minute allotted time frame.
• Maintain patient medical records in Clinic HQ and or Petpoint.
• Guide the technician assigned to you to obtain maximum efficiency.

PAWS has a robust foster care program that places approximately 1,000 animals into foster care yearly. The veterinarians are also responsible for working as a team to provide care for this population.

In addition to our standard rescue work of pulling animals in danger of euthanasia PAWS is also continually expanding and finding additional ways to help achieve no-kill status in the city. We now have a strong intake prevention and owner diversion program where we have staff at animal control daily working to help owners who think surrendering is their only option to find other viable solutions. PAWS is also a founding member of the Philadelphia No Kill Coalition and are closer than ever to Philadelphia being a no-kill city and hope you will join us in our journey!
