The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 95,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director to join our Animal Welfare Division located in our headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.
Reporting to the Division Director, the Assistant Director’s primary role is to assist the Director and other Division staff in implementing AVMA policies and objectives related to animal welfare. The Assistant Director provides scientific staff support to assigned governance entities that develop and recommend policy for the AVMA. They will work collaboratively with volunteer leadership and other staff to identify and research related issues of importance to the profession; and will also assist in developing and maintaining informational and educational materials and programs addressing animal welfare and humane endings for use by veterinarians, governmental agencies, other nongovernmental organizations, and the public. The incumbent should have experience working with stakeholders with varying perspectives; experience in laboratory animal medicine and research is a plus. Approximately 15% travel.

Must hold a DVM/VMD or PhD with demonstrable technical and research competence.
Demonstrated knowledge of, and expertise in animal welfare and scientific inquiry.
Experience in the areas of humane endings and laboratory animal welfare strongly preferred.
Must be able to perform interdisciplinary literature searches and critically evaluate scientific studies (including appropriateness of study design and quality of data).
Must be able to synthesize information, and write clearly, logically, and persuasively on complex scientific subjects for scientific and non-scientific audiences.
Must be able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
Must be able to effectively interact and communicate with members of the scientific and non-scientific communities.
Must be able to organize, plan, and manage group meetings and be skilled in facilitation of consensus among multiple perspectives.
Must be able to function well autonomously and as a team member.
Familiarity with basic computer software required (e.g., Microsoft Word, Web browsers and search engines, Excel, PowerPoint).
Familiarity with statistical software preferred (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Stata, R).
