Clemson University invites applications for the Associate University Veterinarian within the Office of Animal Research, Division of Research. We seek a veterinarian with experience in laboratory animal medicine and research support. The Associate University Veterinarian will report to the University Veterinarian and will assist with supporting the animal research program of Clemson University. The Associate University Veterinarian will work closely with the animal research staff, investigators, and IACUC to elevate services for the University research community while supporting Clemson University's mission and strategic plan and assuring compliance and the ethical treatment of animals.
About the Animal Program
The ethical care and use of animals is central to Clemson University's mission. In addition to teaching activities, Clemson University maintains a significant research portfolio to include biomedical, agricultural and wildlife research. Animal facilities include a central vivarium, an aquatic facility and six agricultural farms. A College of Veterinary Medicine is being established. All animal facilities at Clemson University, including the farms, are AAALAC accredited.
Animal Management and Clinical Care: Performs or manages the clinical care for multiple species (laboratory 90% and agriculture 10%) directly or through oversight of animal care personnel. Participates in providing shared emergency on-call services for the Office of Animal Resources. Maintains all requirements for continued federal and/or state veterinary licensure, USDA Class II accreditation, SC DHEC registration and DEA licensure.
Research Support: Works with the UV to review and facilitate investigator research and teaching IACUC protocols. Assist investigators with animal research projects and activities as needed to support the university's research mission, including surgery, anesthesia, and imaging. Ensures technical staff and research personnel are trained to perform IACUC-approved procedures.
Research Compliance: Assists the UV and Clemson staff with ensuring protocols, programs and facilities comply with applicable laws, regulations and guidelines and provides assistance to the Clemson IACUC as needed. Collaborates with the UV and other Clemson staff to maintain readiness for USDA and AAALAC inspections/site visits. Collaborates with farm managers to ensure humane animal care and use, and compliance with laws, regulations, and guidelines.
Research Center Operations and Management: Assists the UV and facility administration in managing the operations of the Office of Animal Resources and assists with short- and long-term strategic planning.
Teaching and Communication: Assists the UV to develop and present educational materials to ensure Clemson personnel understand relevant laws, regulations, and veterinary medical procedures. Develops, reviews, and modifies SOPs as needed. Serves as a guest lecturer when requested.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: DVM/VMD (or ECFVG equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited program.
Minimum Experience: At least 2 years of laboratory animal medicine experience.
Minimum Licenses and Certifications: DVM/South Carolina State License or eligible (attained within 3 months), Controlled drug license (SC DPH/DEA) or eligible (attained within 3 months), Driver's license, USDA Class II accredited.
Preferred: Experience in a large, complex research animal care and use program. ACLAM eligible or certified, ACLAM residency training, PhD or other advanced degrees in relevant scientific field. Substantial experience in laboratory animal medicine. Experience caring for various laboratory animal species, including but not limited to rodents, fish, ruminants, rabbits, and swine. Experience in caring for agricultural animals.
